Blue Scholars – Summer In The SEA

July 26, 2010

Covering a classic, “Summertime in the LBC”, Blue Scholars give us their latest cut, paying homage to summertime in the 206.

“Last year, I attempted to do a mixtape/freeverse type song using the ‘Summertime in the LBC’ instrumental. Miserable fail. Soon as I turned the mic on, I’d hear the original vocals over and over in my head. So I just started singing that instead, changing some of the lyrics along the way. Then I sent it to a few friends and forgot all about it. A year passed, and The Sun started making cameos again in our gray little city, along with requests to put out a mixed-down version of the song.

“So here it is. Our tribute to summer in Seattle, and an homage to what I believe to be the finest summertime song of my generation. From my birthplace (LBC) to my nowplace (Seattle), to anywhere people of the sun gather to celebrate its presence.” — Geo of Blue Scholars

MTV was able to catch up with N.E.R.D. and hear Pharrell’s thoughts on Pusha T signing with Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music label.

“I think that’s gonna be amazing,” Pharrell said. “[Pusha] had been working with ‘Ye. I told him, ‘You should do that.’ We made a lot of great records together, and we’ll continue to make great records. I want him to grow and get other experiences out in the world. He’s gotta figure that out. He’s gotta go out there and see it. Make no mistake, lyrically, that kid is one of the greats — him and his brother. Lyrically, those guys are really serious. They’re well-respected by all of the good dudes. Jay-Z loves them, T.I., Jeezy loves them. All of your favorite rappers, they appreciate a Pusha line or a Malice line. They do. I’m saying with respect for all those artists — I work with those artists. I know the conversations we had. They like what they do. It’s been a long time coming for Pusha and what it is he’s trying to do. He’s gonna get it. And Malice too.” – MTV

Sidebar: Clipse and Kanye West & Co. would be instantly classic.

Video: Rick Ross Talks Free Mason

July 22, 2010

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Above, Rick Ross talks to MTV about his collab joint with Jay-Z and John Legend, “Free Mason“. He speaks on why he chose to run with that title and the energy generated during the recording session with Hov and Legend.

“I know if I’m on a record with Jay-Z, not only are my rhymes gonna be on point, not only is the flow gonna be intact, but the way I say the words … The title of the record, the meaning of the record, is the title big enough for the expectations of this collaboration? A lot of people were like, ‘Wow, that’s what you gonna title the record?’ I’m like, ‘Why not?’ That’s what hip-hop’s about. Let’s get to the point. It’s so much speculation, so many whispers coming out of the sewers. Why not do a record and call it ‘Free Mason’ and we do what we do on it and they’ll know when they hear it. The title may throw them off, but it’s a good thing. They gotta hear it, and when they listen to it, everything that’s running through their minds, it’ll be answered. That was the whole idea when I brought it to [Jay].”

Teflon Don is in stores now.
